EDITORS COMMENTS
Anna Ivanovna, the Russian Empress (1694-1740): A Regal Portrait of Power and Grace This striking oval portrait captures the regal presence of Anna Ivanovna, the Russian Empress from 1730 to 1740. Anna, depicted here in her forties, exudes an air of authority and grace. Her profile view accentuates her plump features, which were considered a sign of wealth and prosperity during the Russian Baroque period. Born in 1694, Anna was the daughter of a German nobleman, Johann Friedrich, and his Russian wife, Praskovia Saltykova. She was brought up in Russia and married the future Tsar Ivan V in 1710. However, Ivan's brother Peter the Great, who ruled as regent, forced Anna and Ivan to abdicate in 1725, and Anna went into exile. When Peter the Great died in 1725, Anna was brought back to Russia and crowned Empress in 1730. Her reign was marked by peace and stability, as well as cultural and artistic achievements. Anna was an advocate of the arts and supported the development of the Russian ballet and opera. She also encouraged the construction of grand palaces and churches. Despite her popularity among her subjects, Anna's reign was not without controversy. Her favorite, Prince Anton Ulrich of Brunswick, held significant power and was accused of corruption and misrule. Anna's relationship with him was a source of scandal and led to her eventual downfall. In 1740, Anna was forced to abdicate in favor of her nephew, Ivan VI. This portrait, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and fascinating figure in Russian history. Anna Ivanovna's reign may have been short-lived, but her legacy continues to inspire and intrigue scholars and history buffs alike.
