This striking image captures John Alexander Logan (1826-1886), a prominent American military commander of the 19th century, dressed in his full military regalia. Logan, a native of Illinois, joined the U.S. Army in 1842 and rose through the ranks to become a Union general during the American Civil War. He is best known for issuing the General Order No. 11, which called for the expulsion of all Jews from the Union Army, an order that was later rescinded. Logan's military career began during the Mexican-American War, where he served as a brevet major and was wounded in the Battle of Molino del Rey. He continued to serve in various capacities throughout the 1850s and 1860s, including as a brigadier general in the Illinois militia and as a colonel in the U.S. Army. During the Civil War, Logan commanded the 13th Army Corps and played a key role in several important battles, including the Battle of Belmont and the Battle of Cynthiana. After the war, he served as the Commander of the Department of the Missouri and later as the Commanding General of the Department of the Ohio.
