EDITORS COMMENTS
Amélie of Orléans, later known as Queen Amélie of Portugal, is depicted in this stunning 1951 photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library. Born in 1865 as the only daughter of the Comte de Paris, Amélie's royal lineage was deeply rooted in French and European history. However, her destiny lay beyond her native France, as she was to become the wife of King Carlos I of Portugal. The image captures Amélie in a thoughtful and introspective moment, her expressive eyes gazing off into the distance. Her wavy, chestnut-brown hair is styled in an elegant, ornate updo, accentuating the intricate details of her historical dress. The dress, with its high collar and voluminous skirt, is reminiscent of the opulent fashion of the late 19th century. Amélie's marriage to Carlos I took place in 1886, when she was just 21 years old. The union was intended to strengthen the political ties between Portugal and France, and the couple went on to have five children together. Despite the political significance of their union, the photograph reveals a more personal side to Amélie, offering a glimpse into her inner thoughts and emotions. Amélie's reign as Queen of Portugal was marked by tragedy, as she lost her husband and three of her children to premature death. Her resilience and strength during these difficult times earned her the respect and admiration of her people. After her husband's death in 1908, Amélie went into exile in Switzerland, where she lived out the rest of her days. This photograph, with its hauntingly beautiful image of Amélie, serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and often tumultuous history of European royalty. It invites us to reflect on the life of this remarkable woman, who defied the expectations of her time and left an indelible mark on history.
