EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "The Hatter," depicts a charming and enigmatic figure from the beloved literary world of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Published in 1865, Carroll's masterpiece has captivated readers of all ages with its whimsical characters and imaginative storytelling. In this photograph, the Hatter, a central figure in the story, is depicted with an air of madness and mischief that perfectly encapsulates his character. He is shown wearing his iconic tall hat, adorned with a bright red band and a white rabbit as a brooch. The Hatter's expression is playful and mischievous, as if inviting us to join him on an adventure. The photograph, which is part of the extensive collection at Mary Evans Picture Library from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the historical context of Carroll's work. The Hatter's attire, with its Victorian-era details, further emphasizes the connection between the photograph and the literary classic. The table before the Hatter is set for a tea party, complete with a teapot, cups, and a loaf of bread. This scene is reminiscent of the famous tea party scene in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," where Alice encounters the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Dormouse. The photograph invites us to imagine the wild and fantastical adventures that Alice and the Hatter might have shared in Wonderland. The Hatter's presence in this photograph serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of Carroll's work on literature and popular culture. His character, with his eccentricities and madness, continues to intrigue and delight readers more than 150 years after the publication of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." This photograph is not only a beautiful work of art in its own right, but also a window into the rich history of a literary classic.
