1734 1737 1783 1808 Alexei Count Gregory Grigory Orlov

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the powerful and influential brothers, Count Grigory Orlov (1734-1783) and Alexei Orlov (1737-1808), two of the most prominent figures in Russian history during the late 18th century. Grigory, depicted on the left, rose to prominence as a military commander, playing a key role in the coup that led to the overthrow of Empress Elizabeth I in 1762 and the subsequent ascension of Peter III. However, Grigory's tenure as the new emperor's favorite was short-lived, and he was instrumental in orchestrating Peter's assassination and the subsequent elevation of Catherine II to the throne. Grigory went on to serve Catherine as a trusted advisor and military commander, earning the title of Count in 1775. Alexei, on the right, also made a name for himself as a military commander, serving under both Peter III and Catherine II. He played a crucial role in the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, and later led Russian forces against the Swedes during the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790. In 1796, Alexei was appointed as the Governor-General of New Russia, a position he held until his death in 1808. Despite their similarities as military commanders and statesmen, the Orlov brothers had distinctly different fates. Grigory's political maneuverings and ambition earned him wealth and power, while Alexei's loyalty to the crown and dedication to his country earned him respect and recognition. This print serves as a reminder of the complex and dynamic political landscape of 18th century Russia, and the pivotal roles played by these two brothers in shaping its history.
