Von Spee, a prominent German admiral during the early years of the First World War, is best known for his command of the German East Asia Squadron, which engaged in combat with the British Royal Navy in the Battle of the Falkland Islands on December 8, 1914. Born into the noble Reichsgraf family, von Spee began his naval career in the Imperial German Navy in 1875. He saw action during the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900 and later served as the commander of the SMS Dresden during the Agadir Crisis in 1911. In the photograph, von Spee wears the uniform of a full admiral in the Imperial German Navy, complete with the distinctive gold braid and insignia of his rank.
