1160 Adele Jeune

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic beauty and regal presence of Adele, the third wife of King Louis VII of France, also known as Louis VII le Jeune (1120-1180). Adele, whose exact birthdate is unknown, was the daughter of Stephen Count of Blois and Adelaide of Maurienne. She became the queen consort of France in approximately 1154, following the annulment of Louis VII's first marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine. The image showcases Adele's striking features, with her piercing gaze and delicate facial structure. Her elaborate headdress, adorned with precious stones and intricate goldwork, signifies her noble status and the wealth of the French court. The rich fabric of her gown, draped elegantly over her slender frame, adds to the sense of opulence and grandeur. Louis VII, who ruled France from 1137 until his death in 1180, was known for his piety and devotion to the Church. Adele, too, was deeply religious, and the couple's marriage was marked by their shared commitment to the faith. Together, they founded several monasteries and supported the growth of the Cistercian order in France. Despite their pious alliance, the marriage was short-lived. Adele was reportedly unhappy in the arrangement and, following Louis VII's capture during the Third Crusade, she left the court and entered a Cistercian convent. The couple's union ended in 1160, with Adele becoming a nun and Louis VII remarrying to Constance of Castile. This portrait of Adele, Queen of France, offers a glimpse into the complex world of medieval royalty and the intricacies of the French court during the 12th century. With its rich historical significance and stunning visual appeal, it remains a fascinating reminder of a bygone era and the women who shaped it.
