EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of the Battle of Magdala during the Abyssinian War in 1868. The Battle of Magdala, which took place on April 13, 1868, was a significant turning point in the war between the Ethiopian Empire and the invading forces of the British Empire, led by General Sir Robert Napier. The photograph, taken in December of that same year, shows the devastated town of Magdala, located in present-day Ethiopia, lying in ruins. The once-majestic buildings and structures, now reduced to smoldering rubble, bear testament to the destructive power of war. The image is filled with a sense of desolation and loss, as the people of Magdala come to terms with the aftermath of the battle and the destruction of their homes and community. The Abyssinian War, also known as the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, lasted from 1867 to 1868 and was a result of Ethiopian resistance to European encroachment on their sovereignty. The conflict saw the British Empire, along with Italian forces, successfully invade Ethiopia and depose Emperor Tewodros II. The Battle of Magdala marked the end of the war, and the defeat of Emperor Tewodros. This historic photograph, taken by an unknown photographer and imported from Mary Evans Prints Online, provides a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the destruction it leaves in its wake. The image is a valuable historical document, shedding light on a pivotal moment in the history of the Horn of Africa and the complex relationship between European powers and African nations in the late 19th century.
