EDITORS COMMENTS
Abdul Hamid II, also known as Sultan Abdul Hamid II or Abdul Hamid Lith, ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1909. This historic photograph captures the Sultan in military uniform, adorned with a red sash and wearing a traditional Ottoman fez. The image dates back to 1876, during the early years of his reign. Abdul Hamid II is best known for leading the Ottoman forces in several wars abroad, including the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913. However, his military campaigns were not enough to prevent the decline of the Ottoman Empire. His domestic policies were criticized for misgovernance, leading to widespread unrest and instability within the empire. Despite his military successes, Abdul Hamid II's rule was marked by increasing authoritarianism and repression. He suspended the Ottoman Constitution in 1878 and ruled by decree, leading to growing discontent among the population. In 1908, a revolution forced him to restore the constitution and share power with a council of ministers. However, Abdul Hamid II's attempts at reform were not enough to save his reign. In 1909, he was deposed in a coup d'état led by the Young Turks, a group of reformists who sought to modernize the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan went into exile in Europe, living in Austria-Hungary until his death in 1918. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous history of the Ottoman Empire during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Abdul Hamid II's reign was marked by both military successes and domestic turmoil, ultimately leading to his deposition and the eventual dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.
