EDITORS COMMENTS
Abdul-Hamid II, the last Ottoman Sultan to wield significant power before the fall of the Ottoman Empire, was deposed on April 27, 1909, marking the end of the 33-year-long Abdulhamidian era. In this historic photograph, a young soldier stands at the corner of the Yildiz Kiosk, a secluded palace in Istanbul where Abdul-Hamid had resided since his deposition. The Young Turks, a group of reformist officers and intellectuals, had led the revolution against the sultan's autocratic rule. The image captures the sense of anticipation and uncertainty that hung in the air as the Young Turks took control of the palace. The kiosk, a symbol of the Ottoman monarchy, now stood as a backdrop to the new political order. The young soldier, embodying the youthful energy and determination of the revolution, gazes out towards the camera with a sense of pride and resolve. The photograph is a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Turkish history, when the Ottoman Empire began its transformation into a modern, secular republic. The deposition of Abdul-Hamid II marked the end of the Ottoman monarchy and the beginning of a new era, characterized by political reforms, constitutional government, and the promotion of Turkish nationalism. The image also underscores the importance of the Young Turks in shaping Turkey's modern identity. Their efforts to modernize the Ottoman Empire and create a democratic government laid the foundation for the Turkish Republic, which was established in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. This photograph, taken in 1909, offers a glimpse into the complex and tumultuous history of Turkey, a country that continues to grapple with its past and forge its future.
