EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard, published by Mary Evans Picture Library, showcases a striking image of Alfred Lyttelton, the esteemed statesman and accomplished cricketer, in the year 1913. The photograph, taken in a dark, historic setting, captures Lyttelton in the prime of his life, dressed in a formal attire that includes a crisp, high-collared shirt with a cravat and a winged collar. The intricate details of his clothing are further accentuated by the use of a pin to secure his cravat, adding an air of elegance and sophistication. Born in 1857, Lyttelton's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mid Sussex in 1892. He went on to hold various prominent positions in the Conservative Party, including being the Postmaster General and the President of the Board of Trade. Lyttelton's tenure as the Colonial Secretary from 1910 to 1914 saw him overseeing significant developments in British colonies, particularly in South Africa and Egypt. Despite his busy political schedule, Lyttelton remained an avid cricketer and played for Surrey County Cricket Club. His cricketing prowess earned him the nickname 'Lordly Alf' and he captained the English cricket team in 1886. This postcard serves as a testament to Lyttelton's multifaceted personality, showcasing both his political and cricketing achievements. The historical significance of this postcard lies not only in its depiction of a prominent figure in British history but also in its visual appeal, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical memorabilia or a thoughtful gift for history and cricket enthusiasts.
