Hazel dormouse (Gliridae) is a small mammal found in Europe, North Africa and parts of Asia, and is a nocturnal species that lives in woodlands, hedgerows and other areas with dense vegetation, body length of up to 10 cm and weighs between 15-30 grams. Its fur is brownish-grey on the back and white underneath and has large eyes, long whiskers, short ears and a tail that can be as long as its body length. Hazel dormice feed mainly on flowers, fruits, nuts and insects but they also eat bird eggs when available. They build nests out of grasses or leaves which are usually located high up in trees or shrubs for protection from predators such as foxes or cats. Hazel dormice are listed as vulnerable due to habitat destruction caused by human activities such as deforestation and agricultural development. Conservation efforts include protecting their habitats through legislation, reintroduction programs into suitable habitats and captive breeding programs at zoos around the world.
