A Dimetrodon amongst Alethopteris ferns

Dimetrodon was the apex predator of its time. They came as large as 11 feet long, 4 feet tall, and weighing as much as 300 pounds. Their reptilian hide, a relative novelty for that period, ensured their survival out of water. The large sail may have helped them to regulate body temperature, a survival advantage during the extremes of hot and cold during the Early Permian.
Alethopteris was a seed fern that populated much of the world during the Carboniferous and Early Permian periods. Long extinct, fossilized leaves from the Alethopteris are commonly found today

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing scene from the ancient world. A formidable Dimetrodon, the apex predator of its time, stands tall amidst lush Alethopteris ferns. With dimensions reaching up to 11 feet in length, 4 feet in height, and weighing a staggering 300 pounds, this reptilian behemoth was an unparalleled force to be reckoned with. The survival prowess of the Dimetrodon lay not only in its impressive size but also in its unique reptilian hide - a relative novelty during that era. This adaptation allowed it to thrive outside of water when many others couldn't. Additionally, the large sail adorning its back potentially served as a means to regulate body temperature, granting it an advantage during extreme weather conditions prevalent during the Early Permian period. Meanwhile, surrounding our mighty predator are Alethopteris ferns - remnants of an ancient seed fern species that once populated vast regions across the Carboniferous and Early Permian periods. Today, these fossilized leaves serve as poignant reminders of Earth's prehistoric past. Through this vivid illustration captured by Walter Myers for Stocktrek Images, we are transported back millions of years ago into a world teeming with primitive creatures and abundant vegetation. It is a testament to the wonders of natural history and evolution; where fierce predators like Dimetrodon roamed alongside diverse plant life like Alethopteris ferns – forever preserved within these timeless prints.
