This striking portrait captures Archibald Campbell, the first Marquis of Argyll (1598-1661), a prominent Scottish statesman and Covenanter whose loyalties shifted throughout his turbulent political career. Born into the powerful Campbell clan, Argyll rose to prominence during the Scottish Reformation, becoming a key figure in the National Covenant of 1638, which sought to protect Protestantism in Scotland. However, his allegiance to the cause would waver as he navigated the complex political landscape of the time. During the English Civil War, Argyll initially supported the Royalist cause but later switched to the Covenanters after the Battle of Tippermuir in 1644. In 1649, he was appointed Lord High Commissioner to the Scottish Parliament and played a crucial role in the execution of King Charles I. Argyll's shifting loyalties continued even after the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, as he was implicated in a plot against King Charles II and was eventually executed in 1661.
