700 troops due to sail for India and the far east walked off the S. S. Corfu at Southampton

700 troops due to sail for India and the far east walked off the S.S. Corfu at Southampton. They complain that the ship, a 14, 000 ton carrying 2698 officers and men back to their overseas units is overcrowded, that washing and lavatory accommodation is inadequate, recreation facilities lacking. Bad messing arrangements and a shortage of blankets are also among the mens complaints. The area commander Brig. W.C. A. Hanney addressed the men on the Dockside in an effort to persuade them to go aboard without immediate success.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The photo captures a significant moment in history as 700 troops destined for India and the far east disembark from the S. S. Corfu at Southampton dockyard. The soldiers, frustrated by the overcrowded conditions on board, voice their complaints about inadequate washing and lavatory facilities, lack of recreation options, poor messing arrangements, and a shortage of blankets. Despite efforts by Brigadier W. C. A. Hanney to persuade them otherwise, the men refuse to reboard the ship immediately. In this poignant image taken on April 8th, 1946 during the mid-twentieth century era, we witness these disgruntled soldiers leaving Southampton dockyard to venture into town. The monochrome photograph depicts a scene filled with mixed emotions - determination etched on their faces as they march forward yet disappointment lingering in their eyes due to unsatisfactory living conditions. This snapshot not only serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by military personnel during wartime but also sheds light on general topography with buildings lining the dockside in Southampton. As an iconic sailing ship stands tall behind them, it symbolizes both hope for distant shores and discontentment within its walls. Preserved by TopFoto. co. uk for historical documentation purposes (not intended for commercial use), this print encapsulates an important chapter in our collective memory - one that highlights both resilience and dissatisfaction amidst difficult circumstances faced by those who serve their countries far away from home.
