The Third Battle of Plevna, fought from September 14 to 17, 1877, was a pivotal moment in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. In this photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, Russian soldiers are seen advancing towards the Turkish fortifications during the battle. The Third Battle of Plevna was the final and most decisive attempt by the Russians to take the city of Plevna, which had been under siege since July 1877. Despite initial successes, the Russians were ultimately repulsed with heavy losses. The Turkish forces, led by Osman Nuri Pasha, put up fierce resistance, inflicting significant casualties on the Russian army. The battle resulted in no clear victory for either side, with both sides suffering heavy losses. The Third Battle of Plevna is significant in the history of the Russo-Turkish War as it marked the end of the Russian offensive in the Balkans and the beginning of a stalemate. The war eventually ended with the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano in March 1878, which granted Russia significant territorial gains in the Balkans.
