1826 1893 Derby Pound Stanley 15th

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Edward Henry Stanley, the 15th Earl of Derby and renowned British statesman, in the prime of his political career. Born on October 12, 1826, in Knowsley Hall, Lancashire, England, Stanley was the eldest son of Edward George Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, and Lady Elizabeth Grosvenor. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, before entering the House of Commons in 1852 as the Member of Parliament for Ludlow. Stanley's political career was marked by his strong conservative beliefs and his dedication to the Tory Party. He served as Home Secretary from 1866 to 1868, during which time he implemented several important reforms, including the Public Health Act and the Artisans' Dwelling Act. In 1868, he became Prime Minister for the first time, serving until 1874. During his tenure, he implemented the Reform Act of 1867, which extended the franchise to working-class men. Stanley's second term as Prime Minister began in 1874 and ended in 1880. During this time, he focused on foreign policy, particularly in relation to the Russian threat to British interests in the Balkans. He also oversaw the passage of the Education Act of 1870, which provided for the establishment of school boards in England and Wales. The photograph captures Stanley in the late 1880s, when he had retired from politics. He continued to serve as the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire until his death on March 14, 1893. Stanley's legacy as a statesman and political leader is significant, and his contributions to British politics during the Victorian era continue to be studied and appreciated. This photograph is a testament to his enduring influence and the esteem in which he was held by his contemporaries.
